Advanced Pavement Materials for Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure

Description

Pavement materials are crucial factors affecting pavement durability. The asphalt pavement industry has made extensive efforts to develop and promote advanced pavement materials and structures for constructing and maintaining sustainable pavements. Pavement materials that can extend durability, cut costs, reduce neat material usage, and lower environmental impacts are desirable for such purposes. Modified asphaltic and cementitious materials possessing better properties, in certain aspects, have been well developed during the past decades. Meanwhile, some new design ideas that differ from traditional pavement structures have shown noticeable benefits in terms of pavement durability or cost.

Well-designed strategies for pavement maintenance have also attracted the interests of researchers since a large number of existing pavements are facing deterioration all over the world. Material selection is a component of making a pavement maintenance strategy. These materials may include joint or crack sealing and repairing, seal coating, slurry sealing, patching, and overlaying. Some uncommon materials only applied for special purposes (i.e., for bridge pavement, decks, deicing, and flame retardants) are also encouraged here. Many road managers and stakeholders are looking for more options from the development in maintenance materials and strategies.

We invite authors to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will contribute to the development and implementation of advanced pavement materials. The advanced materials shall conform with the goal of sustainability, which commonly implies low cost, high durability, environmental friendliness, and effective resource usage.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Advanced asphalt and cementitious materials for modern transportation
  • New materials for durable pavements
  • Materials under various traffic conditions
  • Recycling and sustainable transportation materials
  • Advanced pavement maintenance strategies
  • Uncommon maintenance materials for special purposes
