(a) Cell density in the core exhibited a rapid decline in scaffolds cultured in static conditions. In contrast, core cell density was maintained in scaffolds treated with flow-perfusion culture. (b) Photomicrograph of MC3T3-E1 cells in the core of a polyurethane scaffold in static culture. The cusp of viability for cells in the core lies between day 4 and day 6 for samples in static culture. Between these time points, there was an 88% reduction in cell density.
