Effect of calcium, S100A1, and calcium plus S100A1 on tension. Skinned MLV was stretched at two velocities (0.1 and 2.0 length/sec; dark and open symbols, resp.) in calcium alone (pCa 6.8; grey), S100A1 alone (circles), or calcium plus S100A1 (triangles). Calcium alone or S100A1 alone slightly increases tension (3–8%). When S100A1 is added to pCa 6.8 solutions, tension is decreased, an effect that is largest at the fastest stretch speed. Tensions are expressed relative to tensions measure in the pCa 9.0 solution (See methods for details). Error bars are SE (for clarity plotted only every 0.05  𝜇 m).
