Regulation of chromatin structure and promoter methylation. p53 can downregulate target genes by recruitment of histone- and promoter-modifying enzymes or their mediators. A high number of genes were shown to be regulated, at least in part, by altering chromatin structure rendering the promoter regions inaccessible for the transcription machinery and cofactors.
