Cordyceps sinensis Increases Hypoxia Tolerance by Inducing Heme Oxygenase-1 and Metallothionein via Nrf2 Activation in Human Lung Epithelial Cells

Lipid peroxidation (TBARS, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance) and protein oxidation (carbonyl groups after derivatization of proteins with dinitrophenylhydrazine) in A549 cells were determined after (0.5% O2) hypoxia exposure for 48 h by spectrophotometric measurement. A significant increase in both lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation was observed in cells exposed to hypoxia and such changes were attenuated in hypoxic cells treated with Cordyceps sinensis extract. Experiments were done in triplicate. Values are mean ± SE of three individual experiments. * .
