5-Lipoxygenase Deficiency Reduces Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity and Lethality

Acetaminophen (APAP) induces 5-LO-dependent liver damage. WT and 5-LO^−/− mice were treated with APAP (3 g/kg) or saline per oral, and after 12 h blood samples were collected to assess liver damage by measuring plasma levels of (a) aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and (b) alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Values are mean ± S.E.M., 𝑛=5, representative of two separate experiments. *𝑃<0.05 compared to saline-treated WT and 5-LO^−/− mice and ^#𝑃<0.05 compared to APAP-treated WT mice. One-way ANOVA was followed by Bonferroni’s multiple comparison test.
