Oxidation of toluene to cis-toluene dihydrol by toluene dioxygenase. Electrons are transferred from NADH through a flavoprotein reductase (reductaseTOL) to a Rieske (2Fe-2S) protein (ferredoxinTOL). The latter reduces the oxygen component, an iron-sulfur protein (ISPTOL), which, in the presence of exogenous ferrous ion, catalyses the stereospecific addition of dioxygen to the aromatic nucleus.
