A Mushroom Extract Piwep from Phellinus igniarius Ameliorates Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis by Inhibiting Immune Cell Infiltration in the Spinal Cord

Piwep reduces expression of integrin-𝛼₄ in the cervical lymph node of EAE mice. Integrin-𝛼₄, a cell adhesion molecule, is highly expressed on lymphocytes that infiltrate the central nervous system. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that the number of lymphocytes with high expression of integrin-𝛼₄ increased in cervical lymph nodes 21 days after the 1st immunization. Piwep reduced the EAE-induced increase in number of lymphocytes immunoreactive to integrin-𝛼₄ in cervical lymph nodes. Scale bar represents 100 μm.
