((a)-(b)) Conventional cochleostomy: exposing the endosteum of the scala tympani with a small burr (diameter 0.6 mm); ((c)-(d)) conception of laser cochleostomy: the bony shell of the cochlea is ablated pulse by pulse using a short-pulsed CO2 laser and the shape of the endosteum can be approximated more precisely.
