E. histolytica thioredoxin system. The Entamoeba thioredoxin system is comprised of thioredoxin (Trx) and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), coupled with peroxiredoxin (Prx) and NADPH. Trx has to be reduced to fulfill its functions, and this reduction is carried out through catalyzation by TrxR using NADPH as a cofactor. Once Trx accepts electrons from TrxR, it can reduce peroxiredoxin (Prx). The resulting form of Prx can protect against oxidative stress by decomposing H2O2 into H2O.
