Evidence for Tissue Toxicity in BALB/c Exposed to a Long-Term Treatment with Oxiranes Compared to Meglumine Antimoniate

Figure 2

Treatment of infections in mice caused by Leishmania (L.) amazonensis. BALB/c mice were inoculated subcutaneously, in the left footpad, with 1.0 × 104 promastigotes. After 4 weeks of infection, the mice were treated weekly with 22.7 mg/Kg/day (1.9 μM/Kg/day) of epoxy-α-lapachone (dark grey square), 11.4 mg/Kg/day (1.2 μM/Kg/day) of epoxymethoxy-lawsone (light grey square), and 22.7 mg/Kg/day (4.1 μM of Sb5+/Kg/day) of meglumine antimoniate (white square), administered subcutaneously with five animals per group. Negative controls were treated with a mix of DMSO : propylene glycol : saline with higher concentration of propylene glycol (1 : 12 : 7) (black square). Lesion sizes (mm3) were measured weekly and the results of third and fourth weeks of treatment and one week after treatment are shown. The data are presented by the mean and standard deviation (SD), from five mice.
