Coronary Atherosclerosis Pathogenesis, Progression, and Regression Modulators: What Have We Learned?

Call for Papers

Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease in which lipid deposits and cell infiltrations are mediated through a complex inflammatory process leading to plaque and tissue build-up within the walls of arteries. This is the underlying cause of the majority of clinical cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which is the leading cause of death in the USA and around the world. Several modulators were identified and known to play a major role in the progression of the disease. The link between atherosclerosis and increased plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc), triglycerides (TG), lower high density lipoprotein (HDL), and related modulators was extensively explored by cardiovascular researchers. In addition, the roles of inflammation and oxidative stress in the development and progression of atherosclerosis were equally investigated. However, despite the extensive efforts on the atherosclerotic plaque characterization, studies on the plaque regression remained very limited with limited success. The use of the genomic and metabolomics approaches in the field of CVD brings great hope for possible identification of some novel therapeutic targets and drug agents that help to reduce the burden of CVD.

In this special issue, we are requesting seminal papers in any area of coronary atherosclerosis; we are particularly interested in original research papers and outstanding reviews exploring the link between lipids and their modulators, inflammation, and oxidative stress and atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. We also emphatically invite submissions addressing basic animals, cells, and clinical research on the disease.
