Scaffolds Reinforced by Fibers or Tubes for Tissue Repair
Description
Scaffolds have been regarded as a fashionable research area due to their crucial role in the new tissue engineering or regenerative medicine approaches. Abundant mechanical properties lay the foundation of the successful implant surgery of scafflods. On the other hand, as a dynamic and hierarchically organized composite, native extracellular matrix (ECM) not only provides mechanical support for embedded cells but also provides mechanical stimulations to regulate various cellular behaviors. So, ideal scaffolds should possess satisfactory mechanical properties from both view of practical applications and biomimetic sense.
To date, some fibers and tubes have been shown to effectively reinforce scaffolds. These reinforced scaffolds have been largely applied to repair hard and soft tissues. However, there are still many challenges that need to be addressed, such as the development of satisfactory processing techniques so as to achieve homogeneous structure and composition throughout the reinforced scaffolds and to obtain a good adhesive strength between the matrix and the fibers or tubes. Moreover, additional studies are required in order to better understand how the fibers or tubes affect the biocompatibility and biodegradability of the scaffolds.
We invite investigators to submit original research and review articles that will motivate further investigations into the scaffolds reinforced by fibers or tubes for tissue repair. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Selection or fabrication of novel fibres or tubes to reinforce scaffolds for tissue repair
- Design and fabrication of novel scaffolds reinforced by fibers or tubes for hard tissue repair
- Design and fabrication of novel scaffolds reinforced by fibers or tubes for soft tissue repair
- New processing techniques to improve adhesive strength between the matrix and the fibers or tubes
- Efforts to get the homogeneous structure and composition throughout the reinforced scaffolds
- Effect of fibres or tubes on the biocompatibility of the scaffolds
- Effect of fibres or tubes on the biodegradability of the scaffolds
- Instrumentation and technology to analyze the interactions between fibres or tubes and matrix
- Interactions between fibre or tube reinforced scaffolds and cell/tissue
Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/bmri/biomaterials/scaff/ according to the following timetable:
