Arrhythmias in Patients with Pulmonary Hypertension

Call for Papers

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is defined as an elevated mean pulmonary arterial pressure at rest and a normal pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PcWP) in patients with precapillary forms and elevated PcWP in postcapillary PH.

The increase in pulmonary vascular resistance leads to an increase of the afterload on the right ventricle, resulting in dilation of the right atrium and ventricle and vascular remodeling. Elevated right heart filling pressures and cardiac remodeling could provide the substrate or trigger for arrhythmias. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) accounts for approximately 30% patients with PH without a pathophysiological correlate of relevant cardiac rhythm disorders. These patients usually present with normal left ventricular function and an impaired function of the right ventricle. Supraventricular arrhythmias are more common than ventricular arrhythmias in these patients and are associated with clinical deterioration but not with SCD.

There are few data on prognostic relevance of ventricular arrhythmias. Therefore, it is important to treat the arrhythmia not only to relieve the symptoms but also to improve the prognosis. Unfortunately, little is known about the pathophysiology of cardiac arrhythmias and safety and efficacy of different arrhythmia treatment methods, as well as the long-term outcome in this specific group of patients. In this special issue, we welcome submissions of original research articles and review articles.

  • Incidence of arrhythmias in patients with pulmonary hypertension
  • Diagnosis of arrhythmias in patients with pulmonary hypertension
  • Medical treatment of arrhythmias in patients with pulmonary hypertension
  • Electrophysiological studies/treatment in patients with pulmonary hypertension
  • Prognostic relevance of arrhythmias in patients with pulmonary hypertension
  • Long-term follow-up of arrhythmias in patients with pulmonary hypertension
