Nano-/Microfabrication of Biomaterials

Call for Papers

The surface composition and functionality of biomaterials and scaffolds are the most important factors for their applications in biomedical fields and tissue regeneration. Bulk and surface properties of biomaterials influence vital cell activities such as cell adhesion, proliferation, extracellular matrix secretion, and differentiation. Polymers bearing methyl, hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino groups have been found to be potential candidates in controlling surface composition dependent effect on the activities of the cells as well as stem cells differentiation. Nano-/microstructural control is also found to be another key factor in tailoring the bioactivity of material surfaces. The morphological/topographical designing of the grafts is also proved to be a strategic approach in improving the bioactivity and biological responses of the biomaterial. Studies have shown that biomaterial surfaces with special nano-/microstructures can control cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization, which are very crucial for the formation and the growth of the new tissue system. Furthermore, the nano-/microporous structures possess higher specific surface area, which can control adsorption of bioactive molecules.

In view of these specialties of the biomaterials, the potential investigators are invited to contribute original research findings as articles or review articles that will stimulate continuing efforts to understand the dimensions of the polymers and bioceramics as well as their composites essentially with bioactive compositions along with 2D/3D nano-/microlevel surface structures.
