Toxicology of Chemical Mixtures: Approaches and Challenges

Call for Papers

Humans are exposed simultaneously to large numbers of compounds from various sources. Although most of the toxicity studies and risk assessments are still focused on single chemicals, research on the toxicology of mixtures has emerged decades ago. The United States Environmental Protection Agency published Guidelines for the Health Risk Assessment of Chemical Mixtures in 1986. This work was followed later by the efforts of The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The importance of ”cocktail effects” evaluation is summed up in recent European Commission statement that highlighted the significant effect that even low-level exposure to a complex cocktail of pollutants over decades could have on health. Advances in toxicological evaluation of chemical mixtures have raised significant concerns on how mixtures affect the environment and human health, especially regarding low-level, long-term exposure which humans routinely encounter.

However, although progress has been made, the toxicology of mixture remains a matter of great concern and a formidable challenge for the scientific community. Methods must be developed for: 1) Integrating the multiple streams of evidence relevant to the mixture toxicity assessment, 2) Predicting the toxicity of mixtures consisting of chemicals of known individual toxicity, 3) Elucidating mechanisms of possible interactions between the chemicals in the mixture, and between the mixture and a certain biological milieu.

The toxicological risk assessment of chemical mixtures is a multifaceted topic for toxicologists, regulators, and the public. Hence, the development of new tools, strategies, and guidelines in this field is of paramount importance.

We have the pleasure of inviting research scientists to submit original research and reviews for this Special Issue of the BioMed Research International, entitled “Toxicology of Chemical Mixtures: Approaches and Challenges.”

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Experimental approaches in assessing the toxicity of chemical mixtures
  • Alternative models for assessing chemical mixture toxicity
  • Target organ toxicities regarding chemical mixture exposures
  • Mixtures of endocrine disrupting chemicals
  • Special pollution issues: ecotoxicology of chemical mixtures
  • Pharmacokinetic modeling of chemical mixtures
  • Toxicological risk assessment of chemical mixtures
  • Effects of low-level exposure to multiple chemicals
  • Statistical methods for the toxicological evaluation of the interactions between chemicals in the mixture
  • Mechanisms of interactions between chemicals in the mixture
  • Appraising chemical mixtures in tumor process triggering
  • New biomarkers of exposure and effects
  • Epidemiological surveys to support the risk assessment
