Protein Misfolding and Aggregation

Call for Papers

The correct folding from the nascent polypeptide chain to the unique native structure is essential for proper function of most proteins. However, many times during the folding process or under specific environmental conditions, proteins get trapped as “misfolded” conformations that can eventually lead to the formation of structured or unstructured aggregates. Formation of these misfolded conformers or aggregates can disrupt normal cellular processes by 1) loss of functionality of the protein due to loss of its native state and/or 2) deposition of large masses of protein aggregates in the tissues, which may impart cytotoxicity directly or indirectly. Many of the critical factors that direct the proteins into their native structure or their entrapment as misfolded conformers and/or aggregates still remain elusive despite extensive research in this field.

This special issue on “Protein Misfolding and Aggregations” is open to any contributions that throw some light on the underlying molecular mechanism of protein misfolding and aggregation and essential factors that guide the process. Submissions that give novel insights in the processes of misfolding and aggregation and that identify ways of inhibiting these events are especially welcome. Further, submission of review articles focusing on the latest findings and the current state-of-the-art developments in this field are encouraged.
