Novel Functional Foods and the Metabolism of Plasma Lipids and Lipoproteins: Special Emphasis on Cholesterol

Call for Papers

Disturbances in the metabolism of cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoproteins are being increasingly investigated as risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Numerous lifestyle, dietary, and pharmacological therapies have been proven effective in managing abnormalities of lipid homeostasis. Additional strategies that are cost-effective and safe and that will assist individuals in better managing their lipid and lipoprotein levels are being explored. One strategy consists of the development of functional foods containing active ingredients with defined beneficial effects on cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoproteins. In vitro studies, studies on animal models, and human clinical trials are still needed to consistently establish the efficacy of functional foods and their underlying mechanisms of action. These studies may support the regulatory approval of health claims relating functional foods to reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. The goal of this special issue is to present an overview of the recent findings in the field of functional foods and lipid metabolism by pulling together a combination of research articles and review articles.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Overview on cholesterol metabolism
  • Impact on cholesterol metabolism of the following:
    • Probiotics enriched foods
    • Plant sterols and stanols enriched foods
    • Omega-3 fatty acids enriched foods
    • Dietary fibers enriched foods
    • Soy-based products
    • Legumes, nuts, and seeds-based products
    • Herbs and herbal products
    • Modified meat and meat products
    • Modified milk and dairy products
    • Products with modified protein content and/or types
