Distinct Patterns of Host Adherence by Neisseria gonorrhoeae Isolated from Experimental Gonorrhea

The (a) adherence and (b) internalization of reisolates and input strain (MS11) to human Chang conjunctiva cells. The level of adherence to cells was calculated by determining the cell-associated CFUs of the host cell monolayers (coincubation for 1.5 to 6 h after an incubation period of 24 h). For internalization, an approach similar to adherence assays by killing the extracellular bacteria with 100 μg/ml (final concentration) gentamicin as previously described. The number of internalized bacteria was determined by counting CFUs recovered following gentamicin treatment. . . .
