Histologic sections demonstrate erosion of the surface epithelium with diffuse involvement of the lamina propria by an atypical infiltrate comprised predominantly of discohesive cells ((a), 10x). On high power (40x), the cells in the infiltrate demonstrate prominent signet ring cell morphology, diagnostic of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma.
