Advances in Mitral Regurgitation

Call for Papers

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most frequent valvulopathy worldwide, yet, its detection, quantification, and thus therapeutic approach face several unanswered questions. Being widely dependent on load conditions, the detection and quantification of MR are indeed challenging. Thresholds and cut-off value to define severe MR are still somewhat debated, especially in the secondary MR setting. Echocardiography remains the most used imaging technique as it is essential to assess the etiology of MR as well as valve anatomy and function. However, given the inherent strengths and weaknesses of echocardiography, an integrate approach to quantify MR has to be pursued, involving eventually other image techniques such as cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Finally, there is no conclusive evidence for a survival benefit after mitral valve interventions for secondary MR nor for patients with severe primary MR and a progressive decrease of ejection fraction or progressive left ventricular dilatation. Last but not least, the horizon of mitral valve intervention is rapidly spreading with several options (mainly percutaneous) that need further evaluation.

Thus, this special issue will appraise the readership of all developments in the fields of mitral regurgitation from imaging diagnostic tools to therapeutic options and presents great interest to all cardiologists.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that seek to address a variety of issues in the diagnosis and management of MR patients. Papers focusing on secondary mitral regurgitation, definition of severity and its relation to outcomes, and interventions (both surgical and percutaneous) are especially welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Echocardiography and mitral regurgitation
  • 2D, 3D, and strain echocardiography in mitral regurgitation patients
  • CMR and mitral regurgitation
  • Defining thresholds for severe secondary mitral regurgitation
  • Echocardiography to guide mitral valve interventions
  • Outcomes of interventions for severe secondary mitral regurgitation
  • Mitral valve repair versus replacement in the secondary mitral regurgitation setting
  • Percutaneous mitral valve interventions for mitral regurgitation
