Antioxidant and Protective Effects of Bupleurum falcatum on the L-Thyroxine-Induced Hyperthyroidism in Rats

Figure 1

Body weight changes in the LT4 and test materials-treated rats. Significant ( ) decreases of the body weights were detected in LT4 control as compared with intact control from 6 days after first LT4 treatment, throughout experimental periods (arrow). However, these decreases of body weights were significantly ( or ) inhibited by treatment of BR 300, 150, and 75 mg/kg or PTU 10 mg/kg from 5 days after administration (dot arrow), respectively. Values are expressed as mean ± S.D. of eight rats; BR: aqueous Bupleuri Radix extracts; LT4: levothyroxine; PTU: propylthiouracil. All BR and PTU were administered from 12 days after first LT4 treatment. All animals were fasted before first LT4 and test material treatment and sacrifice. as compared with intact control by LSD test; as compared with LT4 control by LSD test.
