Pomegranate Juice Metabolites, Ellagic Acid and Urolithin A, Synergistically Inhibit Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer Cell Growth via Distinct Effects on Cell Cycle Control and Apoptosis

Figure 2

EA and UA inhibited proliferation of DU-145 and PC-3 cells. Cells were seeded into 96-well opaque-walled plates at a density of 12,000 cells. After 24 hours, cells were treated for 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 with 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 μmol/L of EA or with 15, 30, 60, and 90 μmol/L of UA. Following treatments with EA, in DU-145 the IC50 at 96 hours was μmol/L, while in PC-3 the IC50 was μmol/L at 48 hours and μmol/L at 96 hours (a, c). Following treatments with UA, in DU-145 the IC50 value at 96 hours was μmol/L (b), while in PC-3, UA did not inhibit the cell growth of 50 percent. Each experiment was performed in triplicate, and the results represented the means ± SD; *significantly different from DMSO control, .
