Fishing for Nature’s Hits: Establishment of the Zebrafish as a Model for Screening Antidiabetic Natural Products

The fluorescent probe GB2-Cy3 can be used to test candidate antidiabetic compounds in zebrafish. (a) The known antidiabetic compounds ampkinone (10 μM) and rosiglitazone (10 μg/mL) increased probe uptake in larval zebrafish. From a screening perspective, probe uptake can be readily quantified by fluorescent microplate reader analysis of lysed larvae for GB2-Cy3 uptake (b) or image-based quantification of fluorescent signal from the zebrafish eye ( compared to the control group) (figure reproduced with permission of the Royal Society of Chemistry from [92]).
