The Mechanism Underlying the Antibacterial Activity of Shikonin against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

S. aureus cell wall peptidoglycan (PGN) inhibits the antimicrobial activity of shikonin (SKN) against the MRSA (ATCC 33591) strain. MRSA cultures were treated with SKN (7.8 μg/mL, 0.5 MIC) in the presence of indicated concentrations of PGN (a) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS, (b)) at 37°C for 24 h; cell viability was determined by the absorbance at 600 nm.
