Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Functional Gastrointestinal Diseases

Call for Papers

Functional gastrointestinal diseases (FGID) are common in the world and account for more than 40% of clinical visits to gastroenterology clinics. However, treatment options for FGID have been limited. Only a few medications have been developed for the treatment of FGID and few or none are available in the market currently depending on where one lives. Meanwhile, alternative and complementary medicine (CAM) has received more and more attention among patients with FGID and gastroenterologists.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review papers on the applications of various methods of CAM to FGID, including esophageal motility disorders, gastroesophageal reflux, noncardiac chest pain, functional dyspepsia, gastroparesis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea, and pelvic floor disorders. The CAM methods include Chinese herbs, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, transcutaneous electroacupuncture, massage, meditation, relaxation techniques, tai chi, spinal manipulation, and yoga. Both basic and clinical studies are invited.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Clinical studies/trials on the use of any method of CAM for treating FGID
  • Animal studies exploring novel applications of CAM for treating FGID
  • Studies investigating mechanisms and pathways involved in the application of CAM for FGID
  • Novel methodologies and technologies of CAM with potential applications to FGID
  • Reviews and meta-analysis on CAM for treating FGID
  • Comparative studies between CAM and academic medicine for treating FGID
