Natural Products for Ameliorating Degenerative Diseases

Description

Herbal medicines have been used for thousands of years for the treatment of several ailments. Herbal medicines contain different classes of secondary metabolites with beneficial health effects which are considered as important sources of lead structures. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in the use of natural products because of their reduced side effects compared to synthetic drugs. Several synthetic drugs have been used for the treatment of different degenerative diseases. However, some of these drugs are expensive and produce serious adverse effects. The use of these drugs may be unsuccessful in some cases due to development of tolerance and relapses and therefore may be of limited therapeutic benefits. In this regard, natural products represent an important source of new lead structures for the development of many drugs for ameliorating oxidative stress and degenerative diseases.

This special issue is dedicated to integrate the pharmacological mechanisms of natural products in ameliorating oxidative stress-associated diseases and the chemistry of secondary metabolites. We cordially invite researchers to contribute their original research articles and reviews in our special issue.

This comprises articles on the effect of natural products from plant, marine, and microbial sources (bacteria, algae, and fungi), herbal preparations, extracts, semisynthetic derivatives, and compounds modified by genetic/epigenetic techniques in the treatment of oxidative stress and degenerative diseases. Articles dealing with standardization/ isolation and structure identification of the active components which ameliorate these diseases are also included.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Molecular mechanisms of natural products against cancer, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases
  • Natural products in ameliorating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases
  • Clinical and preclinical studies of natural products ameliorating degenerative diseases related to oxidative stress (such as hepatic, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and joint diseases)
  • Effect of natural products on degenerative and oxidative stress related diseases. Role of natural antioxidants in food and medicines
  • The use of nanoparticles and other drug delivery systems of natural products in ameliorating degenerative diseases
  • Bioavailability and pharmacokinetic studies of natural compounds used in ameliorating degenerative diseases
  • Standardized herbal preparations used in ameliorating degenerative diseases
