Therapeutic Implications of Targeting AKT Signaling in Melanoma

Akt3 but not Akt2 or Akt1 is upregulated in the majority of melanoma cells. Protein lysates were harvested from melanocytes and melanoma cell lines representing radial (WM35, WM3211), vertical (WM115, WM98.1, and WM278), and metastatic (UACC 903) stages and analyzed by western blotting. Arrows indicate the cell lines expressing high Akt3 and pAkt. Note. Expression of Akt1 and Akt2 is not changed in majority of advanced melanomas, indicating that Akt3 is the key regulator of cell survival in melanomas [9].
