Weight Recidivism after Bariatric Surgery

Call for Papers

A number of meta-analyses have demonstrated the effectiveness of bariatric surgery in improving severe obesity and its associated comorbidities. Despite the marked weight loss following bariatric surgery, long-term weight regain and failure of sustained weight loss are seen in a proportion of patients. Some studies report that weight regain can be seen in up to 10-20% of patients after surgery. Understanding the etiology of weight recidivism after bariatric surgery is complex and often multifactorial.

The purpose of this special issue is to engage researchers studying weight recidivism after bariatric surgery and to comment on its incidence, the etiologies, management options, and public health implications. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The incidence of weight recidivism after bariatric surgery
  • Comparison of the failure rate of different bariatric operations
  • Mental health causes for weight regain after surgery
  • Dietary failure and weight recidivism
  • The role of hormonal factors and weight loss failure
  • The association between physical activity and success after surgery
  • The adjustable band and failure
  • The sleeve gastrectomy and failure
  • The roux en Y bypass and failure
  • The biliopancreatic diversion and failure
  • The role of a multidisciplinary clinic in managing weight loss failure
  • The economic impact of weight regain on society and obesity
