Inverse Scattering and Microwave Tomography in Safety, Security, and Health

Call for Papers

Electromagnetic diagnostics and radar systems are of increasing interest in many application domains where the aim is to characterize in a qualitative and quantitative way targets in electromagnetically complex scenarios. The exploitation of usual data processing approaches, despite their simplicity of use, does not allow the results to be fully interpretable even in simple cases. Therefore, the necessity of developing electromagnetic inverse models arises, which account accurately for the physics of the sensing and can achieve more reliable and stable solution when qualitative reconstructions are achieved. The availability of accurate modeling is necessary when the aim is the quantitative characterization of the targets where, besides the mathematical difficulties of the local minima and the ill-posedness, a need arises to achieve accurate evaluation of the key factors playing in the inverse scattering (incident field, Green's function). Lastly, the diversity in the data is useful for the solution of the inverse scattering problem and this pushes towards nonconventional measurement configuration and antenna arrangements, where still the necessity of a modeling arises. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Effective inverse scattering approach able to deal with large investigation domains and to achieve qualitative reconstructions in terms of localization and geometry estimation of the targets. This topic is of interest for surveillance and detection issues in security domain as well as monitoring for safety of the large infrastructures
  • Inversion approaches for “quantitative” reconstruction in laboratory and field conditions as for medical diagnostics
  • Development of new diagnostics systems in the range from RF to THz frequencies for novel or nonconventional exploitation of the inverse scattering
  • Data correlation and information fusion approaches for integration of inverse scattering methods with other sensing techniques
