Description

The existence of mutual coupling effect can cause many problems in antenna array applications and array signal processing. Recent advancements in signal processing have inspired new applications for narrowband and wideband antenna arrays such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, ultra-wideband (UWB) short-range communication, MIMO radar, UWB radar systems, satellite navigation system, near-field imaging, and sensing for biomedical applications. Depending on the application, mutual coupling affects the performance in a different manner. Extensive work has been contributed to characterize and compensate such undesirable effect.

In recent years, research interest has been focused on development of wireless subsystems with antenna array in the front end of the physical layer. Realization of such wireless subsystems requires proper designs of front-end RF electronics and antennas so that the signals can be properly transmitted and received. As a result, accurate characterization and effective compensation of the mutual coupling effect is one of the important factors to consider in the design of wireless subsystems.

This special issue provides an international forum for researchers in antenna arrays and wireless subsystem research to disseminate their results and ideas when transmitted or received signal undergoes scattering due to the presence of various obstacles. In particular, papers on all topics related to scattering and mutual coupling effects in antenna arrays and wireless subsystems are welcome. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Analysis and modeling methods for scattering and mutual coupling in wireless subsystems
  • Measurement and calibration methods for antennas subjected to scattering and mutual coupling
  • Mutual coupling compensation methods for antenna arrays
  • Optimization of antennas performance subjected to scattering and mutual coupling
  • Compact antenna arrays and compensation of mutual coupling effects
  • Mutual coupling effect on operation of MIMO subsystems
  • Scattering and mutual coupling effects on operation of smart/adaptive antennas
  • Scattering and mutual coupling effects in biomedical sensing subsystems
  • Scattering and mutual coupling effects in broadband antenna subsystems
  • Scattering and mutual coupling effects in RFID subsystems
  • Novel applications of antenna and wireless subsystems
  • Any other relevant topics
