Figure 8: 3D volume renderings of MSC locations in the heart. Model-based processing was used to perform segmentation, quantification, and localization of quantum dot-labeled MSC’s in an infarcted heart. A 3D volume rendering of brightfield images of the heart is shown with a 3D volume rendering of MSC location 24 hours after a tail vein injection of 100,000 MSCs. MSCs were injected immediately following ligation of the LDA. MSC location was found to correspond to local blood flow in the infarcted heart. A long-axis (a) and short-axis (b) view of the heart shows cells located primarily on the right side of the heart. A corresponding long-axis 2D slice is shown along with a volume rendering of MSC location (c). In all images, the suture locations are visible (arrows).
