Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Early Diagnosis of the Neurodegenerative Disorders

Call for Papers

Magnetic Resonance (MR) plays a crucial role in radiologic imaging for diagnosis, staging, and follow-up studies of the neurological diseases because of the high-quality informative images it provides. Developing new methods for quality improvement of the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and developing algorithms for early clinical diagnosis are active research areas. New methods and technologies related to the MRI scanners hardware design for neuroimaging are needed to improve the quality of the images. Visual assessment of the MRI is used usually in clinical practice and quantitative analysis are performed with the manually marked images. But the manual methods are subjective, not repetitive, time-consuming, and tiring due to the huge amount of imaging data and the different brightness and contrast of the displaying screens. Therefore, automated methods and tools are required for processing the neuroimage data for the early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorders like tumors, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and so forth.

The goal of this special issue is to present current advances in early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorders that use MRI with the state-of-the-art methodologies and devices. Software applications related to the computer-aided diagnosis applications that use brain MRI are welcome. Hardware studies that include MRI technology development and new methods/technologies related to MRI scanners hardware design for neuroimaging are also welcome. Review articles which describe the current state of the art are encouraged. Usage of the standardized datasets for validation is strongly encouraged with the authors’ own datasets.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Segmentation applications for early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorders
  • Classification applications for early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorders
  • Supervised and unsupervised machine learning applications for early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorders
  • Pattern recognition applications for early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorders
  • MRI biomarker discovery methods for early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorders
  • Development of MRI methods and hardware to improve neuroimaging
