In the upper box the surface of Costa Rica and the coast near the shelf is viewed from the west using SRTM3 topography data [28]. To the northwest, Lago Nicaragua (LN) is shown in blue. The geological map of Costa Rica (Tournon and Alvarado [43]) was draped onto the topography in the lower part of the figure. Intensive red colors indicate the volcanic arc of Costa Rica with the most active volcanoes in the circum-pacific margin. The ophiolite complex of the Nicoya Peninsula is shown in dark green, and sedimentary formations and rocks are displayed in light and dark yellow tones. Dark blue marks basalt.
