The performance of the model is determined by regression test error which can be obtained by comparing both predicted MRR and SR from model and experimental data is designed using central composite design (CCD) based RSM. Our result shows that the regression error is minimized by using cubic kernel function based RVM model and the discharge current is found to be one of the most significant machining parameters for MRR and SR from ANOVA.

Relevance Vector Machine Based Analyses of MRR and SR of Electrodischarge Machining Designed by Response Surface Methodology

Practical implementation of a STEP-based architecture to provide a fully integrated and interoperable platform of data exchange has always been an intriguing issue. A variety of CAD/CAM environments are struggling to embed and support STEP standard and its protocols in order to seamlessly operate within global data exchange. However, apparent paucity of efficient and reliable structure for data communication, manipulation, and restoration has remarkably hindered the desired progress. In this paper, taking these shortcomings into account, a practical architecture is introduced and STEP-based agents are implemented and installed on the platform. Moreover, feature recognition, interaction, and machining precedence as crucial issues of CAD/CAM research have been considered in developing the interoperable platform.  Seamless integration and interaction of CAD/CAM modules are provided in the proposed system. The prototype is finally verified and discussed through a case study.

</svg> Taguchi orthogonal array, four controllable factors each at three levels are tested to determine the optimal combination of factors and levels in the injection moulding process. Considering the multiple quality characteristics involved in this study, we investigate the effects of processing parameters on hoop tensile strength, elongation at break, and shrinkage of the ring stopper both separately and simultaneously because changing a parameter can result in the improvement or deterioration of each quality response and of the overall product performance. The results revealed that the performance of an injection-moulded ring stopper under the optimal process conditions is equivalent or slightly better than that of the part produced from virgin resin. The performance of recycled plastics can be effectively enhanced to levels comparable with virgin resins using the Taguchi optimization approach.

Improving the Performance of Reprocessed ABS Products from the Manufacturing Perspective via the Taguchi Method

The single-row layout problem (SRLP), also known as the one-dimensional layout problem, deals with arranging a number of rectangular machines/departments with equal or varying dimensions on a straight line. Since the problem is proved to be NP-hard, there are several heuristics developed to solve the problem. This study introduces both a Clonal Selection Algorithm (CSA) and a Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (BFA) for SRLP. The performance of the algorithms is assessed by using three (small, medium, and large sized) well known test problems available in the literature. The promising results illustrated that both algorithms had generated the best known solutions so far for most of the problems or provided better results for a number of problems.

Assessing the Performance of Two Bioinspired Algorithms to Solve Single-Row Layout Problem

We investigate the optimal designing of chain sampling plan for the application of normally distributed quality characteristics. The chain sampling plan is one of the conditional sampling procedures and this plan under variables inspection will be useful when testing is costly and destructive. The advantages of this proposed variables plan over variables single sampling plan and variables double sampling plan are discussed. Tables are also constructed for the selection of optimal parameters of known and unknown standard deviation variables chain sampling plan for specified two points on the operating characteristic curve, namely, the acceptable quality level and the limiting quality level, along with the producer&#x2019;s and consumer&#x2019;s risks. The optimization problem is formulated as a nonlinear programming where the objective function to be minimized is the average sample number and the constraints are related to lot acceptance probabilities at acceptable quality level and limiting quality level under the operating characteristic curve.

Optimal Designing of Variables Chain Sampling Plan by Minimizing the Average Sample Number

This paper explores an integrated inventory model when the deterioration rate follows exponential distribution under trade credit. Here, it is assumed that demand rate is a function of selling price and the permissible delay in payment depends on the order quantity. In the model shortages are completely backlogged. The maximization of the total profit per unit of time is taken as the objective function to study the retailer&#x2019;s optimal ordering policy. This paper also presents a practical application example where the proposed inventory model is utilized to support business decision making. Particularly, the model developed in the paper could be useful in the area of supply chain management. Finally, sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution with respect to major parameters is carried out. Our result illustrates that this model can be quite useful in determining the optimal ordering policy when the trade credit period is being analyzed.

Integrated Inventory Model for Deteriorating Items with Price-Dependent Demand under Quantity-Dependent Trade Credit

We study resource constrained project scheduling problem with respect to resource leveling as objective function and allowance of preemption in activities. The branch and bound algorithms proposed in previous researches on resource leveling problem do not consider preemption. So, representing a model for the problem, a branch and bound algorithm is proposed. This algorithm can handle preemption in resource leveling problem. Comparing the resource leveling problem and the preemptive resource leveling problem, it is observed that considering preemption in the problem leads to better results in the objective function. This improvement imposes additional time to solve the problem. Coding the algorithm in MATLAB and checking it on the projects with 8 and 10 activities, results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient.

A Branch and Bound Approach to Solve the Preemptive Resource Leveling Problem

This work presents a novel fabrication approach of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) reinforced copper (Cu) matrix nanocomposites. A combination of nanoscale dispersion of functionalized MWNTs in low viscose media of dissolved paraffin wax under sonication treatment followed by metal injection molding (MIM) technique was adopted. MWNTs contents were varied from 0 to 10&#x2009;vol.&#x25;. Information about the degree of purification and functionalization processes, evidences on the existence of the functional groups, effect of sonication time on the treated MWNTs, and microstructural analysis of the fabricated Cu/MWNTs nanocomposites were determined using TEM, EDX, FESEM, and Raman spectroscopy analysis. The results showed that the impurities of the pristine MWNTs such as Fe, Ni catalyst, and the amorphous carbon have been significantly removed after purification process. Meanwhile, FESEM and TEM observations showed high stability of MWNTs at elevated temperatures and uniform dispersion of MWNTs in Cu matrix at different volume fractions and sintering temperatures (950, 1000 &#x26; 1050&#xb0;C). The experimentally measured thermal conductivities of Cu/MWNTs nanocomposites showed remarkable increase (11.25&#x25; higher than sintered pure Cu) with addition of 1&#x2009;vol.&#x25; MWNTs, and slight decrease below the value of sintered Cu at 5 and 10&#x2009;vol.&#x25; MWNTs.

Uniform Dispersion of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes in Copper Matrix Nanocomposites Using Metal Injection Molding Technique

Fuzzy logic-based techniques have been developed to model input-output relationships of metal inert gas (MIG) welding process. Both conventional and hierarchical fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) of Mamdani type have been developed, and their performances are compared. The conventional FLC suffers from the curse of dimensionality for handling a large number of variables, and a hierarchical FLC was proposed earlier to tackle this problem. However, in that study, both the structure and knowledge base of the FLC were not optimized simultaneously, which has been attempted here. Simultaneous optimization of the structure and knowledge base is a difficult task, and to solve it, a genetic algorithm (GA) will have to deal with the strings having varied lengths. A new scheme has been proposed here to tackle the problem related to crossover of two parents with unequal lengths. It is interesting to observe that the conventional FLC yields the best accuracy in predictions, whereas the hierarchical FLC can be computationally faster than others but at the cost of accuracy. Moreover, there is no improvement of interpretability by introducing a hierarchical fuzzy system. Thus, there exists a trade-off between the accuracy obtained in predictions and computational complexity of various FLCs.
