Microscopic photographs of polystyrene latex flocs formed by polyelectrolyte flocculants of a large molecular weight. When the ionic strength is low (a), low-density bulky flocs are formed. In contrast, high-density flocs are formed when the ionic strength is high (b) so that adsorbed polyelectrolytes undergo reconformation smoothly [39].
