Biobased and Low Environmental Impact Polymers and Composite Materials

Call for Papers

The need for a sustainable and environmentally friendly development is becoming increasingly urgent because of the high growth rate of the developing countries. More than 80% of our energy comes from the combustion of fossil fuels, which still remain the dominant energy source for years to come. Unfortunately, fossil fuels are witnessing a rapid depletion as a consequence of the increasing worldwide energy needs; in addition, their combustion has a high environmental cost because of the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming. The development of new energy production methods based on renewable sources and novel energy saving materials, devices, and processes represents two of the most important societal challenges the world must cope with. At the same time, the set-up of technologies that aim to minimize the impact of human activity on environment health is a crucial issue. To address these topics, the scientific community has a mission to develop more efficient technology, innovative processes and methods, new devices, and high performance materials.

Particularly, the development of new advanced materials requires the careful study of the chemical and physical mechanisms, as well as the study of synthesis processes, fabrication, and characterization methods in order to find application in the suitable fields (such as medicine, aerospace, and nanotechnology).

Accordingly, the aim of this special issue is to publish original and high-quality research papers and review articles based on recent advances and the current state of the art in the synthesis and characterization (chemical, physical, and/or mechanical) of organic and inorganic advanced functional materials (low and high molecular weight) in terms of employing ecofriendly raw materials and/or low environmental impact synthesis processes in the field of polymers and composite materials.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Biobased polymers and resins
  • Sacrificial materials for protection, repair, and restoration actions
  • Advances in processes and synthesis methods of low environmental impact materials
  • Novel foamed materials for environmental and energy saving applications
  • Biobased composites
  • Inorganic polymers based on waste starting materials or recovered materials
