Advances in the Design of Polymers for Biomedical Applications

Call for Papers

The prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases is central to an enhanced quality of life and the growth and development of societies. Diabetes mellitus, for instance, worsens the quality of life of millions of people worldwide. The emergence of new drug resistance mechanisms protracts illnesses, increases mortality, and challenges progress in the healthcare delivery as well as growth of the economy. Also, the realization that the efficacy of therapeutics directly depends on their route of administration continues to inspire the design of smart drug delivery systems, with degradable polymer-based hydrogels and nanocontainers as frontline materials. Polymer scientists and engineers are interfacing fundamental knowledge from synthetic chemistry and polymer science with biology to push the frontiers towards tackling established and reemerging healthcare problems.

This special issue seeks to disseminate original researches and reviews that integrate innovative elements of polymer science with biology and medicine. Submissions should cover topics with a focus on polymer design for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design, synthesis, and characterization of
    • polymers for therapeutics and antimicrobial agents
    • polymers for drug delivery, gene delivery, cell culture, and delivery
    • polymers for bioimaging and biosensing
    • polymers for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
    • biodegradable polymers
    • biopolymers
    • polymer bioconjugates
    • bioactive polymer
