Direct inhibition of elastase activity by P. leucotomos and stimulation of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 expression by P. leucotomos in epidermal keratinocytes. Elastase was incubated with 0, 0.01, or 0.1% P. leucotomos (PL) prior to the addition of elastase substrate and the enzyme activity was determined fluorometrically (a). Nonirradiated (NI) UVA or UVB radiated keratinocytes were exposed to PL (0, 0.01% or 0.1%) for 24 hours and examined for TIMP-1 protein (b) and TIMP-2 protein (c). *𝑃<0.05, relative to respective controls (0% PL).
