Effector pathways involved in autoantibody mediated joint inflammation and bone destruction. Shown are the cell types involved in joint inflammation and tissue destruction during autoantibody induced inflammatory arthritis. Upon immune complex binding to mast cells and tissue resident macrophages, proinflammatory mediators are released, which result in the recruitment of neutrophils and monocytes. Whereas neutrophils are responsible for tissue inflammation and joint swelling, inflammatory monocytes recruited to the joint develop into osteoclasts which are responsible for bone and cartilage erosion.
