Unlocking the Potential of Internet of Vehicles in Intelligent Transportation Systems

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

Internet of Vehicles (IoVs) is an emerging concept transmuting the notion of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). In IoV, entities like vehicles, infrastructure, drivers, and passengers are equipped with the Internet. Vehicles are smart vehicles that are capable of communicating with peer vehicles, driver and passengers, and Road Side Units (RSUs) through the Internet and Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology specifically designed for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Internet connectivity in IoVs provides entities of the network with the flexibility of leveraging the services available in the cloud such as resource management, high performance computing, parallel processing, database management, unlimited storage, and thousands of web services. Besides adding benefits, Internet brings some challenges to IoV as well, such as security, privacy, trust management, latency, protocol validation, complexity of routing algorithms, environmental issues, scalability, dependability, adaptability, and dynamicity. This special issue aims at highlighting the latest developments in identifying the key challenges in IoV along with their available and potential solutions. The special issue is expected to provide a platform for academicians and industry researchers to identify and debate technical problems and recent accomplishments associated with IoV.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • IoV architecture
  • IoV resource management
  • IoV applications
  • Smart vehicles and infrastructure
  • Leveraging fog computing (edge computing) in IoV
  • Design challenges for protocol development in IoV
  • IoV security and privacy
  • Trust and reputation management in IoV
  • Energy-efficient Road Side Units (RSUs)
  • Quality of Service (QoS) in IoV
  • Communication technologies in IoV
  • Cloud based VANETs
  • Demand responsive vehicles
