Vehicular AD Hoc Networks (VANETs) have received increasing attention from both academia and industry due to their ability to integrate technology and expertise to create and provide innovative services, improve safety and mobility, and thus increase the efficiency of existing infrastructure. The appearance of new technologies – such as the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and cloud computing – has provided opportunities for the development of VANETs by revolutionizing the modern world of travel via the use of sensors, applications for mobile devices, and other technological advancements. These sensors and mobile devices can gather local information after deployment, and the collected data is very important in making correct decisions in relation to motor drivers. Computational Intelligence is an extensive way to allow for knowledge discovery, information sharing, and supported decision making when establishing a large, fully functioning, real-time, accurate, and efficient VANET.

This new notion involves some key networking issues which have changed substantially over recent years as a result of the changes in users’ requirements for the communications convergent multi-service wired and wireless networks. Recent advances in the information and communication technologies are facilitating substantial improvements in transportation, providing technologies and development that ensures safer and more efficient mobility. Novel technologies, such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, advanced automation, etc., are providing solutions that are creating ground-breaking applications that are challenging the way transport is perceived in the society of 21st century.

The objective of this Special Issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions that address challenges in contemporary network design, dimensioning, and optimization. This Special Issue aims to gather recent advanced technologies and applications that address network protocol design, low latency networking, context-aware interaction, energy efficiency, resource management, security, human-robot interaction, assistive technology and robots, application development, and integration of multiple systems that support Vehicular Networks and smart interactions. Designing, dimensioning, and optimization of communication networks resources and services have been an inseparable part of the development of telecommunications and ICT infrastructures from the very beginning of their existence. Original research and review articles are welcome.
