Since the original report of the Strecker reaction in 1850, a number of reactions now known as Multicomponent Reactions (MCRs) have been discovered and developed. These reactions, in which all reagents (or components) are added at once and react in one set of fixed conditions to provide a final product, can be used for the small-step synthesis of complex natural products or natural product-like compounds, as well as potentially bioactive compounds and commercially-available drugs. Apart from the well-known (and named) reactions already reported, many new multicomponent procedures, as well as major improvements, modifications, and reaction scope extensions of known protocols are reported each year.

The aim of this special issue is to highlight the new developments in the field, presenting new MCRs and valuable improvements of the known protocols. Review articles describing the current state of the art concerning new reactions and their development over the past few years are also welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • New Multicomponent Reactions (MCRs) not yet reported in the literature. Use of transition metal catalysis and/or photochemical methods are especially welcome
  • Significative improvements to known MCRs, including scope extensions, modifications, and/or substitutions of one or more components, as well as improvements concerning green and sustainable protocols
  • Extensive postmodification of known MCRs products, as well as new couplings of known MCRs
  • Applications of known and new MCRs to the synthesis of biologically active compounds, natural, or natural product-like compounds and known drugs
  • Improvements concerning stereoselective versions of known MCRs
  • Review articles covering already reported recently developed MCRs outside of the known (named) protocols are also welcome
