Interference Management for Wireless HetNets

Call for Papers

A wireless heterogeneous network (HetNet) is a wireless network, which consists of devices using different underlying radio access technology (RAT), for example, an OFDMA-based two-tier cellular network with one macrocell and several femtocells.

There are several benefits of a HetNet as opposed to a traditional homogeneous wireless network including improved coverage, reliability, and spectrum efficiency. Coverage is improved because different RATs may fill holes in coverage that any one of the RATs alone would not be able to fill. Reliability is improved due to the diversity provided by different RATs, while spectrum efficiency may be improved by making use of RATs utilizing the same spectrum. However, the spectrum sharing in HetNets would cause cochannel interference between RATs, which is an issue still to be solved.

The special issue focuses on topics related to interference management of wireless HetNets in accordance with issues of user mobility, load balancing, base station association, clustering, power control, cognitive sensing, and so on. We invite researchers with novel ideas and cutting-edge research in the relevant areas. We solicit high quality work that would significantly contribute to the advancement of this theme. The following research areas of this special issue are exemplified.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Geographically clustering and/or grouping in wireless HetNets
  • Distributed interference alleviation technology for wireless HetNets
  • Load balancing and interference management in HetNets
  • User and base station association in cellular HetNets
  • Information theoretic analysis in HetNets with interference
  • Trade-off between energy efficiency and interference minimization in HetNets
  • Coordinated, cooperative, and cognitive interference management approaches for wireless HetNets
  • Other emerging areas related to this theme
