Therapeutic Applications of Oral Biomaterials and Dental Regenerative Materials

Call for Papers

The oral cavity contains various types of microorganisms and some of these have been implicated in oral diseases such as caries, infections, and periodontitis, which are among the most common bacterial infections in humans. Over time, many new dental biomaterials, including restorative and regenerative materials, have been developed and commercialized with improved mechanical and physical properties. In the last decade, the trend has been changed toward the addition of bioactive components in dental biomaterials. Dental biomaterials for the restoration of oral function are prone to biofilm formation, affecting oral health. The purpose of dental biomaterials is not only to restore the oral function but also to restrict the ingress of microorganisms. Advances in research science are now focused on using therapeutic agents in these biomaterials to address the problems associated with oral diseases including cancers, caries, periodontitis, oral mucosal lesions, and maxillofacial injuries.

This special issue on will focus on drug delivery systems and how these are utilized in dental biomaterials for the treatment of oral cancers, infections, caries, and periodontal infections. Recent studies based on drug release, novel materials, and evaluation of drug delivery systems through in vitro and/or in vivo studies would be the highlight of this issue. We would like to invite researchers to contribute original research articles as well as review articles related to the topic. We encourage studies with an interdisciplinary approach of drug based dental restorative and regenerative materials, synthesis of experimental dental biomaterials, and integration with therapeutic agents.

  • Oral diseases and disorders
  • Drug loaded dental adhesives, dental resin-based composites, and restorative materials
  • Drug delivery for oral cancers
  • Periodontal membranes with therapeutic agents
  • Therapeutic agents for oral lesions
  • Drug loaded reinforcing agents
  • Polymers with antibacterial characteristics
  • Interaction of cells and drug loaded dental biomaterials
