Generally, before proceeding to the detrending process mentioned in Figure 1, most authors preprocess the time series through integration: , where is the integrated value, is each individual measurement, and is the mean of the series. The resulting integrated time series complies with the conventional random-walk model and thus is easier to interpret. However, this standardization comes at the price of a significant smoothing of the time-series profile, thus arguably loosing significant information.
