Diabetes and Immunity: Cellular and Cytokine Regulation

Call for Papers

The involvement of the immune system in the pathogenesis of all types of diabetes is increasing every day. The roles of innate and adaptive immune responses through the action of immune cells and cytokines are reported in type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic T-cell-mediated autoimmune disease that results in the destruction and loss of pancreatic islet-producing beta cells. In addition, emerging evidence suggests the pathological role of the immune system in chronic inflammation and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

This special issue will cover the distinct or intricate regulatory roles of immune system in type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes mellitus. This special issue aims to focus on how immune cell-mediated cytokines, T helper cell-polarized subtypes (Th1/Th2/Th3/Th17/Th21 and others), and regulatory T-cells could influence the metabolic process and pathway in type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes mellitus.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Immune system regulation in type 1 diabetes
  • Regulatory roles of immune system in type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes
  • Implication of immune system at cellular and cytokine levels regulating molecular metabolic pathway in type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes
  • Involvement of oxidative stress associated with T-cell polarization and inflammation in the development of diabetes
