Novel Mechanistic Insights in Diabetes Distress-Related Cardiovascular Risk

Call for Papers

Acute or chronic exposure to diabetes-related stressors triggers a specific psychological and behavior distress syndrome that advances to a complex emotional reaction including fears, worries, blame, burden, and depressive symptoms. This syndrome is usually described for most cases of diabetes with suboptimal glycemic control, which becomes poorer due to the reduced compliance of distressed diabetic patients for treatment and self-management. Accordingly, diabetes distress mostly accounts for the high rates of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity assigned to diabetic patients. When taking that into account, this information points to the experimental identification of integrative molecular players of cardiovascular dysfunction underlying diabetes distress as the better plan for providing novel mechanistic insights for selectively targeting cardiac and vascular competence for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy purposes. However, the challenge in developing a reliable animal model of diabetes distress makes only few experimental findings available for guiding a clinical decision.

Considering the referred challenge faced in this field, the purposed scope for this special issue encourages submissions relating to experimental studies aimed at identifying the molecular mechanisms and the downstream key mediators of cardiovascular dysfunction in stressed diabetic animals. Likewise, review articles covering the current concepts and novel perspectives regarding the mechanisms underlying diabetes distress-related cardiovascular risk will also be welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Oxidative stress as the key mechanism of diabetes distress-related cardiovascular risk
  • Proinflammatory signaling underlying cardiovascular risk during diabetes distress
  • Endothelial microparticles as key players of diabetes distress-related cardiovascular risk
  • Novel biomarkers for diagnosis of cardiovascular risk during diabetes distress
  • Novel therapeutic targets for controlling cardiovascular risk during diabetes distress
