Traditional Medicine in Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Call for Papers

The explosive increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes presents a challenge for health care system in almost all countries around the world. Although hyperglycemia is the common manifestation of the disease, the etiology of type 2 diabetes is highly complex and modern medicine is always looking for new effective drugs or drug combinations. Plant materials have been used for treatment of diabetes in different traditional systems across the world. In many instances, the chemical constituent(s) of the plant responsible for antidiabetic activity has been isolated and identified. For some plant-derived products, the mechanism of action has also been elucidated. Thus, it is vital to begin a systematic evaluation of plant-derived antidiabetic chemicals or constituents. A better understanding may lead to development of improved drugs for the treatment of diabetes.

We invite articles which utilize systematic studies about the chemical constituent, pharmacological actions, and toxicity of the plant materials with antidiabetic activities. Also cellular and molecular mechanisms are needed to be determined to have detailed information on their usage and dosage in human healthcare. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Antidiabetic plants used in traditional systems medicine in different countries
  • In vitro and in vivo studies for evaluation of antidiabetic effect of plant-based traditional therapy
  • Identification of active constituent in purported antidiabetic plant-based therapy
  • Isolation, purification, and characterization of active principles
  • Common method of preparation of medicinal plants
  • Adverse reactions to any one of them or to the additive or synergistic effects of chemical interactions
