Strategies to Assess and Optimize Grape and Wine Quality

Call for Papers

Over the last years, the evidence points out that global warming and changes in rainfall patterns are having a great impact on viticulture and wine production. These climatic changes impact on grape composition, which in turn affects wine quality. Therefore, the wine industry has made great efforts to improve the quality of wine under these unfavorable and changing conditions. However, it is a difficult task since the impact of these conditions on wine quality depends not only on geographical areas but also on the grape varieties.

Currently, there is great interest in the development and/or the improvement of new or alternative methodologies for determining grape and wine composition and for controlling wine quality, which includes nondestructive spectroscopic methodologies, among others. At the same time, important research is being carried out on how different viticultural and/or oenological strategies could affect grape and wine composition and quality.

This special issue is intended to publish original research articles describing new strategies for the determination of wine composition, quality control, and wine quality improvement, amongst others. Moreover, review articles addressing the most recent advances in these areas will also be considered.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Advances in analysis of grape and wine composition
  • Role of wine composition in its organoleptic properties
  • Viticultural strategies for optimizing grape and wine quality
  • Remote sensing approaches for estimating water status of vineyard
  • New strategies for reducing the environmental impact of wine production
  • Influence of new winemaking and aging techniques on wine quality
  • New approaches for wine and grape quality control, traceability, and authenticity
  • Strategies for assessing and avoiding the presence of potential toxic compounds in wine (ethyl carbamate, biogenic amines, ochratoxins, etc.)
  • Impact of increasing wine quality on its potential biological properties
